Workshop

FMWS - Introduction to the Window of Tolerance Trauma Model in Alternative Dispute Resolution (RML-FMWS001)

Description

This workshop offers a clear, accessible, and highly practical introduction to Dr. Dan Siegel’s Window of Tolerance model, tailored specifically for family mediators, parenting coordinators, and arbitrators. Drawing from trauma theory, neuroscience, and frontline experience supporting survivors of violence, the session explores how stress, overwhelm, and emotional activation impact client behaviour—and how dispute resolution professionals can respond effectively.

Through guided self-reflection activities, participants map their own Window of Tolerance and learn to recognize patterns of hyper- and hypo-arousal in themselves and in clients. The workshop explains core brain science in easy-to-understand language, highlights the differences between trauma-informed practice and trauma-based services, and demonstrates how the autonomic nervous system shapes conflict behaviour.

Participants also learn practical tools for self-regulation and co-regulation, including strategies to help clients return to a state where they can make decisions, engage productively, and feel safe. This is an essential session for any practitioner looking to deepen their trauma-informed skills and better support clients navigating fear, stress, and conflict.
